• Built and managed a small group(3-5) of usability specialists;
hired and supervised staff; coached visual designers, product managers
and other stakeholders in human-centered design; promoted usability
throughout Lycos.
• Built flexible usability lab, consisting of closed-circuit TV,
eye-tracking and video hardware, participant database, scheduling
procedures, and so on.
• Conducted usability evaluations — dozens of products, hundreds
of users — for a wide range of product categories, including communities,
content destinations, e-commerce, pesonalization, search and navigation,
and so on.
• Worked with teams to apply various methods for representing user
needs and for studying interaction. •Methods:
design space analysis, personas and scenarios, card sorting, diary
studies, simple contextual inquiries, paper prototyping, expert
reviews, walkthroughs, and so on.
• Worked with teams on conceptual models and information architectures
in search and navigation, personalization, and content destinations.
• Studied perceptual interaction – scanning and parsing – of Web
pages with eye-tracking.
• With visual designers and information architects, developed and
implemented style guides and best practices.
• Worked with business development to leverage expertise in usability
for improved partner relationships, better partner integration,
and new deals.
• With Marketing Information and Engineering Research, contracted
research studies with EyeTools.com, EyeTracking.com, Vividence.com,
and other vendors.

, April 10-11, 2000, Boston University Corporate

How do people read Web pages? By employing a range of
usability engineering techniques, along with eye-tracking data,
Lycos seeks to answer this question. We present a framework of
claims about how people scan, parse and scroll Web pages when
deciding where next to click. We illustrate this framework
with real examples, which suggest the strengths and weaknesses
of various design alternatives for structuring information. The
framework represents general themes derived from observations of
hundreds of people interacting with dozens of products.
